CASA MARE - 2011

The Expression ”Casa mare” is, in Romanian language,  a definition which evoke al lot of feelings and emotions. Its literal translation in Italian, La Casa Grande, doesn’t represent his real  meaning, it is more a plastic definition handed down through centuries by the vast world of Rumanian traditions, a plastic sense transmitted through the generations.
“Casa mare”  is for each Romanian and  in particular for each Moldavian (belonging to the historic Principality of Moldova, now divided between three countries: Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) a room, usually a part of his own home, reserved for guests welcome, a reception area to be respected and preserved for visiting friends and relatives, even unexpected.  In the past, the girls used to gather over weekends in the Casa Mare for singing songs, sewing and making by hand their dowry. The males could get to keep them company but only playing instruments. In this room, which is considered sacred, after baptism, the newborn child was handed over to the care of the mother. Even today, in every village of the Republic of Moldova and Romania there is no home without this room especially equipped with curtains and carpets handmade in which it retains the dowry of their daughters.
And also in Casa Mare, when a family member dies, this room is used to keep the vigil for the final farewell of friends and relatives. In short, a true symbol of the sacred family!
Casa Mare Project (hereinafter referred to only as the project), will be based on the principles, values and feelings intimately connected with the meaning of his name.
His purpose is to reconstruct, in a foreign land, the conditions of hospitality and generosity typical of traditional countryside culture for  those still living in "the Romanian world”. The project aims to build a reversal of roles between the Romanian /Moldavian immigrant citizen in a foreign country and Italian native host: to build a Casa Mare  in Italy as a meeting place and host in which to promote forms of social, cultural and economic cohesion and development.
It is intended to be a center of reference not only for  many Romanians / Moldovans in the area but also and above all, a meeting place for all those who, motivated by a thirst for knowledge, want to get closer and discover the customs, traditions and cultures of this  part of Europe,  ignored and unknown for too many decades.

The project intends to develop as follows:
1. locate an area for Casa Mare to be found on the territory of the Province of Varese;
2. links and contact between the associations Romania / Moldova in Lombardy as well as for individuals;
3. establish a working group for  areas of expertise able to manage further activities;
4. schedule a calendar of cultural events in order to find the attention and involvement of local communities;
5. promoting all forms of dissemination (paper and internet) with the help of radio and television  useful for promoting events  and discover the tourism / landscape of Moldova;
6. enhance the artistic craftsmanship of Moldavian/Romanian people through concerts, exhibitions and shows, as well as through a windows shopping to be carried out both on-line and at the headquarters of Casa Mare.
All the events and demonstrations  will be made possible on the territory of the Province of Varese and in the entire Region of Lombardy only through an intensive exchange of cooperation with some Romanian cultural realities, active in the territories of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. In particular, these respective associations that bring together popular Moldavian artists, will play a major role in the development project. Through their contribution in terms of artistic experience will be organized in Italy shows and exhibitions compiling  ancestral stories and legends of the people of Romania/ Moldova,  demonstrations of folk music and everything that can help to know the vast world of traditional culture of Romania.

The project plans to develop a greater social cohesion among the local population of the province of Varese and all the other "new citizens" in the territory.
Through paths of discovery and knowledge, it is intended to provide a fair humus in favor of a peaceful, active and fruitful coexistence between the different cultures represented by the vast world of "migrants".
It means to promote a series of socio-cultural events (ethnic cuisine, international poetry competition, exhibition of paintings by international artists from the Province of Varese, multicultural concert, mini football tournament, public assembly to understand the reality of their local and foreign discomfort, by the presentation film screenings and debates) and a means of disseminating television capable to help Italian listeners to discover some countries of origin of migrants, their cultures and traditions, up till now almost unknown.
Therefore, it will be prepared a monthly television format that will be broadcasted by two local networks from the province of Varese. The program will be dedicated to the presentation of a foreign country through images, tourist proposals and interviews with institutional and other special guests representing the respective Country.

The project was conceived by the Association “Casa del Mondo” ("House of the World") And will be implemented with the participation of the 'Association of Social Promotion Italia-Moldavia (ONLUS) and Chernobyl Project Committee

The project has the ambition to be a valuable tool for intercultural mediation. Through television images and other opportunities to meet, it will be facilitated the contact with all those groups of citizens who, for reasons of injury or simply lack of stimuli, they hadn’t developed a correct propensity to multi-ethnic coexistence. At the same time, the project intends to create the favorable conditions for the alien in order to guarantee them a greater integration and respect of Italian law, rending them responsible for a healthy lifestyle. Only through a thorough knowledge of the 'other', of their native country, its culture, its traditions, we can hope to establish, as soon as possible, a new social equilibrium based on mutual respect.  The wide world of volunteering can not “cover” with its own commitment only, this state of indifference and of social fragmentation in which the new communities often struggle to integrate. We need a common effort to overcome these mental barriers. The immigrant must be able to bring out the positive aspects (social and cultural), so that they can subvert the easy stereotypes, whether created by individual behavior often taken as general rules. It is also expected at the end of the project to arouse in new volunteers the interest to the world of immigrants, so they can eventually "train" volunteers who might be dedicated to the intercultural matters.

Specific objectives
 Therefore, the specific objectives of the Project are to be:
·        facilitate the social integration of foreigners on our territory;
·        encourage knowledge of "new cultures";
·        facilitate the learning of all regulations relating to residence in Italy of a foreigner;
·        promote knowledge of new Countries by developing alternative and unusual tourism routes;
·        find festivals and folk traditions typical of countries of migrants origin;
·        enhance the role and work of voluntary associations, in the territory, dealing with the world of "immigrants"

The project starts from the desire of the Association of Social Promotion Italia-Moldavia (ONLUS) to encourage and develop social and intercultural relations between the Province of Varese and the Republic of Moldova.
The intention, foreseen as one of the statutory purposes of the Association, is analyzed and designed through an unusual and unique way, using the promotion of the sport of cycling as a catalyst for socialization.
The project is motivated especially because of the extraordinary global sporting event to be held in Varese in the coming month of September 2008, an outstanding way of cycling promotion that can certainly make this sport develop also in countries such as the Republic of Moldova, where cycling has not assumed yet an educational and training value.
The involvement of students in the realization of the project, will also contribute to the spreading, in the younger age groups, of a strong awareness, which will be useful to encourage a greater integration of Moldovan citizens in our province. There will also be promoted geographical, historical and cultural knowledge about the Republic of Moldova, thus presenting to the students a detailed vision of the new Eastern European nationalities. The same linguistic Latin roots, a keen and secular sense of Roman, cultural affinities, are just some of many reasons that should lead us to regard the Republic of Moldova (and of course Romania, his real homeland) a friendly country which is deeply bounded to us.
The project will be realized during 2008, particularly during summer and autumn. Several initiatives are planned to be carried out both on the Moldovan territory and in the Province of Varese.
There will be identified three stages of the project implementation, absolutely together and interdependent, regarding the location of the events:

  1. To be held in the Republic of Moldova
  2. To be held in the Province of Varese
  3. To be held simultaneously in the Republic of Moldova and in the Province of Varese

In particular the project intends to propose:
1. A bike tour, departing from Municipality of Besozzo, to the distant Republic of Moldova (about 2,400 Km). The event will be solemnly celebrated and promoted by the contribution of the Communal Administration of Besozzo and by “Pro Loco di Varese”, which will organize an information booth in the city center, as a first symbolic step of a long bicycle trip. On this occasion, the “Pro Loco di Varese”, will deliver some gifts to be given to the Moldovan authorities, reflecting the common desire to promote solidarity and friendship relations with the people in Moldova.
The virtuous sportive act will be done by an enthusiast cyclist from Varese, that will run the way to the Moldovan border, where he will be symbolically escorted by a group of young amateur Moldovan cyclists to the city of Chisinau (which is the capital of Moldova). Governmental and official visits are planned with the municipal administration of the capital. The extraordinary athletic and sportive movement will be related and documented in a volume of the next edition which will be distributed mainly in schools of our province;
2. An art competition among the students of the School of Art from Chisinau (an Institution in course of twinning with the Art School of Varese) on cycling and an artistic exhibition exchange, in Varese and in Chisinau with the works created by students;
3. An exhibition of drawings, held in a public municipal hall of the Moldovan capital, made by students of the High School Dante Alighieri from Chisinau, which is  the only public school from Republic of the Moldova where is studied Italian language;
4. Distribution of informative materials and gadgets related to world cycling and the Province of Varese, near the city's schools;
5. Organization of a series of fun and sporting events on the cycling to be carried out in August in a summer camp for children, with the participation of voluntaries of the association.
Therefore, the project aims to highlight not only the sport aspects of cycling but also to emphasize the propedeutic value of this sport discipline for a proper and healthy growth of children with particular reference to the Moldovan children with diabetes mellitus.
The Association of Social Promotion Italia-Moldavia (ONLUS) has already an another important project of solidarity in the Republic of Moldova, which is in phase of realization and is supported and shared by the Province of Varese (Department of Social Policies), related right at the social – health problem caused by the disease of child diabetes.
On the territory of the Province of Varese will be organized initiatives and events designed to support planning purposes, even with the support and with the cooperation of the institutions and associations who share the spirit of solidarity of the project.
In particular, will be proposed:
1. An exhibition of works done by students of the School of Art "Sciusev" from Chisinau on the topic of cycling, to be realizd in the exhibition hall of the Artistic High School of Varese;
2. A photographic exhibition documenting the journey of the cyclist of Varese, in the Republic of Moldova;
3. The public presentation of the book (diary) and its spread in sensitive areas (cycling sports associations and schools)
All these events will be achieved by the contribution of the “Pro Loco di Varese”, the municipality of Besozzo, and the Association “Casa del Mondo” (ONLUS) (“House of the World”, NPO) of Varese, in addition to the State Artistic High School "Frattini" of Varese and other educational Moldovan institutions.
